This installation procedure assumes that you want to install the
application files on your local drive. The procedure also writes all
the Registry entries that the application requires to your local
Registry. However, you might want to install the application files on a
network drive for a number of reasons---for example, if the network is
backed up regularly, or if the local drive is low on available space.
For better performance, Compaq recommends that you install on a local
drive.
1 Preparing to Install
The following sections contain instructions for preparing to install
Availability Manager software on Windows systems.
1.1 Uninstalling Old Software
If you have previously installed an Availability Manager Version 2.0-1 or earlier kit, you must uninstall your old kit before installing the Version 2.2 kit. To do so, follow these steps:
When you uninstall the old kit, you might be asked if you want to delete a number of files, including some, if not all, of the following:
C:\WINNT\System32\declog.exe C:\WINNT\System32\pwel32.dll C:\WINNT\System32\pwiocb32.dll C:\WINNT\System32\pwlogsvc.exe C:\WINNT\System32\spawn32.exe C:\WINNT\System32\drivers\deccore.sys C:\WINNT\System32\drivers\decndis.sys C:\WINNT\System32\drivers\damdrvr.sys |
If you have Pathworks installed, delete only the last file, damdrvr.sys. If you do not have Pathworks installed, you can safely delete all the files you are prompted for; the new kit does not need these files.
Also, copy the following file to a different folder so that it can be restored after the installation:
\Program Files\Compaq\Availability Manager\AvailMan.ini |
A problem exists with the Shared Files Dialog Window on Intel platforms during an uninstall operation. If you have any other window open (such as the Windows Explorer), the status box is moved to the back when the uninstall operation encounters a shared file to be removed. Look for InstallShield Wizard in the task bar, and single-click it to bring the message box about the shared file to the front. You can then click Yes to remove a shared file or No to keep the file. (Do not remove a file unless you are sure no other application needs it.) |
To download the software, follow these steps:

availman022_i.exe -- for Intel systems
running on Windows 2000 or Windows XP
|
Compaq strongly recommends that you read the release notes before proceeding with the installation. To access the release notes:

This section explains tasks associated with installing the Availability Manager software on Windows systems.
To install the software, follow these steps:
If you have any other window open (such as the Windows Explorer) during an installation, this window will be in front of the reboot dialog box at the end of the installation. Look for InstallShield Wizard in the task bar, and single-click it to bring the reboot window to the front. Note that you will also see this problem at the end of an uninstall operation. |
The Availability Manager software for Windows systems is packaged in a
self-extracting executable (.EXE). If you run multiple installations of
Availability Manager Version 2.2, the .EXE unpacks the installation in
the same temporary folder. As a result of a duplicate installation, the
system displays a message box entitled Overwrite Protection,
which contains a message that "the following file is already installed
on your system... Do you wish to overwrite the file?" You can ignore
these messages. Click Yes to All.
2.2 Reinstalling Version 2.2
If you reinstall this version, the software detects whether the Availability Manager has already been installed and displays a Welcome dialog box with the following options:
| Option | Description |
|---|---|
| Modify | To add new components and replace existing components with the latest versions. |
| Repair | To reinstall the product completely. |
| Remove | To uninstall the product. |
Select Modify to reinstall this version or
Repair to install later versions of the software.
2.3 Stopping and Restarting the Installation
If you click Cancel in the course of an installation, a message is displayed indicating that your installation is incomplete. What you do next depends on whether your network bindings are complete:
For large-memory configurations, you might want to increase the heap sizes of the application for better performance. However, the default values are adequate for most installations.
To modify the memory allocation pool (heap) values for the Availability Manager on Windows systems, you must modify the minimum and maximum heap default values in the Availability Manager shortcut command. (The shortcut value is stored in the Programs folder of the Start Menu folder.)
To modify the heap values, follow these steps from Windows Explorer:
If you use your own shortcut to invoke the Availability Manager, you need to change it to reflect a change in the command line for Version 2.0 of the product. To make this change, follow these instructions for either Windows 2000 or Windows XP:
Steps for running the application follow.
The Availability Manager displays the Application window. (Refer to the Getting Started chapter in the Availability Manager User's Guide or online help for Getting Started.)
