Changing Passwords for OpenVMS accounts

There are currently two different types of accounts supported on OpenVMS. The method used to change passwords for these two types of accounds is different.

Traditional OpenVMS Account

Traditional OpenVMS accounts provide access to OpenVMS (KANGA, TIGGER, WINNIE) and modems for interactive computing, E-mail, etc. They authenticate your password from an OpenVMS database. Examples of account names which are of this type include student personal accounts like X99SMITH, class accounts like 123JONES, and student research accounts like 99JOHNSON. Employee accounts like SMITH or SMITHJ which are 8 characters or shorter might be either Traditional or NetIDs (formerly known as Unified); longer names are always Traditional.

WMU Bronco Netid aka Unified Account

WMU Bronco NetIDs, also known as Unified Accounts, provide access to OpenVMS (KANGA, TIGGER, WINNIE), Solaris(UNIX), and modems for interactive computing, E-mail, WebCT, etc. with a single account name and password. They authenticate from the same Kerberos database used by the Solaris (UNIX) systems. Unlike the traditional OpenVMS account, the password for these accounts is case sensitive. That is, Acd8I99 is different than ACD8I99. There are also other differences in the rules for choosing passwords. Examples of account names which are of this type are student accounts like a0smith (may appear as A0SMITH on OpenVMS) or employee accounts like JSMITH.

Note: Not all accounts which exist on UNIX have corresponding OpenVMS accounts at this time.
