ADA

ADA is a powerful, general-purpose language with integrated facilities supporting many modern programming practices. ADA was designed for the United States Department of Defense.

Note: Due to the large amount of memory required by the ADA compiler, users are encouraged to use the ADA$BATCH queue for compilation, or the ACS COMPILE (which defaults to /SUBMIT) when compiling ADA programs.


ARCHIE

ARCHIE is a utility to query the Archie anonymous FTP databases using Prospero. It will check the databases for entries about the files that are available via anonymous FTP from sites around the world. It predates WWW.

BASIC

The BASIC language. BASIC was originally developed for use by students with little or no programming experience. It has become one of the most popular programming languages. The OpenVMS implementation of BASIC has been expanded into a powerful programming language while retaining the traditional ease of use.

BMDP

BMDP (BioMedical Data Programs) is a collection of programs for data description, display, and analysis. The BMDP programs are divided into eight main categories:

CALCULATE

A simple calculator program, which evaluates algebraic formulas and many common functions.

CHANGE

CHANGE is a utility program for changing sequential files from one format to another and also doing optional tab conversions and blank suppression.

CMS

The VMS DEC/Code Management System (CMS) is a library system for software development and maintenance. CMS stores source files in a library, keeps track of changes made to the files, and records user access to the files.

CMS is available on KANGA and TIGGER. It is not available to outside, non-university users.

COBOL

The COBOL language. COBOL is a high performance business data processing language based on the ANSI X3.23-1974 standard. It also includes many features from the recent ANSI-85 standard.

COMPIL

The COMPIL program is a utility which simplifies the task of compiling, linking, and running programs under VMS. It allows the user to replace the normal three step process of

$ language
$ LINK
$ RUN
by the single command
$ EXECUTE

The EXECUTE command chooses the appropriate compiler for each file, decides whether compilation or linking is necessary, and includes any special libraries required for the languages.

Confer V

Confer V is a VMS implementation of the Confer II electronic teleconferencing system. Confer provides a number of different ways for people to communicate with one another: conferences, messages, notes, bulletins, and meetings.

Groups can hold discussions using conferences. Members of the group discuss topics of mutual interest over extended periods of time. Confer stores and organizes this information and presents it to each member on request. This process facilitates discussion among small or large groups of people separated by time and space.

C

The C language. DEC C is a general purpose programming language featuring modern control and data structures. It is especially popular for writing transportable software. DEC C is an ANSI standard C compiler.

C++

The C++ lanuage. DEC C++ is a general purpose programming language featuring modern control and data structures and objects. The DEC C++ compiler supports the language definition as specified in "The Annotated C++ Reference Manual", excluding exception handling.

DTM

DEC/Test Manager is a tool that automates the process of software testing. It organizes software tests and automates how you run tests and evaluate their results.

Datatrieve data base package and query system.

DVIPS

DVIPS is a translator which converts device independent output from TeX and LaTeX to Postscript for printing on the LPS32, LPS20, or LPS40 laser printer(s).

DVIPS is available on KANGA and TIGGER.

The command to convert a .DVI file to Postscript is

DVIPS <file-name>

DVIPS will generate a Postscript file with the same name and a filetype of .PS.

DXML

Digital Extended Math Library (DXML) is a set of computationally intensive mathematical subroutines that are optimized for Alpha platforms. These routines are drawn from both public domain and proprietary libraries. DXML includes five sublibraries or components:

Most routines are available in both real and complex versions, as well as in both single and double precision. G-float and IEEE floating point formats are supported on OpenVMS Alpha.

EDT

EDT is an interactive text editor which is normally used in its screen editing mode, but may also be used as a line editor. The screen editor mode requires a VT52, VT100 type, or VT200 series terminal, or one which emulates one of these terminals.

EDT is available on all OpenVMS systems.

EDT is normally invoked with the EDIT/EDT command.

EVE

EVE is one of the variations of the TPU text editor. It is a screen oriented text editor which may be used on VT100, VT200, or compatible terminals. EVE is available on all OpenVMS systems. FMS

FMS is the Forms Management System, designed to aid in the development of application programs that use video forms. FMS is available on KANGA and TIGGER.


FORTRAN

The FORTRAN language. FORTRAN is a language primarily used for scientific and engineering applications. DEC FORTRAN is a full implementation of ANSI FORTRAN-77 with extensions, including expanded file handling capabilities for VMS, additional data types, and data structures.

FTP

The FTP utility uses the Internet standard File Transfer Protocol to transfer and manipulate files between your VMS computer and a remote host.

FTP is available on KANGA, TIGGER, and RIGEL.

If the name of a remote host is specified on the DCL command line, FTP immediately attempts to connect to the FTP server on that host. If no remote host is specified, FTP prompts for commands.

GKS

GKS, the Graphics Kernel System, is an international standard high-level graphics function library. It supports a wide variety of graphics workstations and hardcopy graphics devices. It conforms to the ANSI X3.124-1985 GKS Standards document. GKS is callable from FORTRAN, C, and other VMS languages.

IMSL

The IMSL Library is a comprehensive collection of over 500 FORTRAN subroutines offering diverse mathematical and statistical problem solving capabilities.

The IMSL library is available on KANGA and TIGGER.

IMSL's software license does not allow copying programs LINKed into executable (.EXE) form with IMSL routines to other systems or to any system outside WMU. Users who wish to transport such executable programs must obtain permission from

JOBLOG

JOBLOG will capture the output for a terminal session, place it in a file and, upon exit, give you the option of printing it, saving it, storing the log file in a secure area and sending notification of it to another user, or deleting it.

KERMIT

Kermit is a file transfer protocol. It allows the transfer of files over terminal lines from a remote Kermit program to the local Kermit program. Kermit ensures that files are transferred error free.

LASER

The LASER command provides an interactive menu system for printing on the LPS32, LPS40, LPS17 or LPS20 laser printers. It simplifies the printing procedure by presenting the valid options for print location, data type, orientation, etc., for your selection.

To print a file with the LASER command, enter the command

LASER <file>
where <file> is the name of the file to print.

LaTeX

LaTeX is an extended version of TeX with macro definitions which simplify preparation of documents.

This version of LaTeX is available on KANGA and TIGGER.

The command format for LaTeX is:

$ LaTeX [/qualifiers] input-file

LaTeX has the same set of available qualifiers and the same filename conventions as TeX.

LISREL

LISREL is a general computer program for estimating the unknown coefficients in a set of linear structural equations. The variables in the equation system may be either directly observed variables or unmeasured latent variables which are not observed but are related to observed variables. PRELIS can be used to create correlation matrices used with LISREL. To use LISREL or PRELIS, users must call the procedures from an SPSS program. Lotus 1-2-3

Lotus 1-2-3 is an integrated program supporting spreadsheet analysis, database management, and business graphics. It is compatible with Lotus 1-2-3 Release 3 on the PC. It can be run on any VT100, VT200, or compatible terminal or terminal emulator. See the appropriate section below for information on keyboard mappings. Currently, Lotus 1-2-3 is limited to a maximum of 10 concurrent users. Lotus 1-2-3 is available on node KANGA. LPSFORMAT

LPSFORMAT is a program for preprocessing ANSI text files for printing on the LPS40 laser printer. It provides reasonable default margins, pitch, and tab settings. It also allows the user to control page orientation, line wrap or truncation, characters per inch, lines per inch, and all margins.

The general form of the LPSFORMAT command is:

LPSFORMAT /sw1/sw2.../swn

LSEdit

The VMS Language-Sensitive Editor (LSE) is a multi-language advanced text editor specifically designed for software development. It provides support for the following products:

MAIL

MAIL is the PMDF electronic mail system. It allows you to send messages to other users on your system or on other computers connected to the Internet.

MAIL is available on all OpenVMS systems on campus.

To run MAIL, use the MAIL command.

MAINT

MAINT is a full-screen File Maintenance utility that can be used to maintain directories/files. Directories are presented to the user in a series of one or more screens and allows the user the opportunity to work with entire directories at one time instead of working with a few files and having to do a DIRECT to see the current state of the directory. The following functions are available in MAINT: 1) delete files/directories 2) copy files 3) rename files/directories 4) protect files/directories 5) edit an ACL for a file/directory 6) list a file's contents to the screen 7) change directories 8) get full directory information on a file 9) search for a specific file in a directory 10) suspend MAINT and return to DCL level 11) create extended textual descriptors for files and directories 12) access on-line help For more information on MAINT, enter the command

Maple

Maple is a system for mathematical computation - symbolic, numeric, and graphical. Maple is also a language for symbolic mathematical calculation. Maple includes hundreds of built-in functions and commands.

Maple is a product of Waterloo Maple Software, and is licensed for University use. Maple is not available to outside users.

MAPLE version 3 is available on nodes TIGGER and KANGA.

Maple requires a VT100 or VT200 compatible terminal or terminal emulator, or an X windows display.

To set up to run Maple, at the $ prompt enter:

@COM$COMMAND:MAPLELOGIN

If you use Maple frequently, you should place this command in your LOGIN.COM file.

After the Maple environment has been set up, enter the command

MAPLE
at the VMS $ prompt. If you want to use the X Windows version, enter the command
XMAPLE
at the VMS $ prompt, instead. Maple will respond by displaying its logo and copyright notice, and will display the prompt ">"

MMS

DEC/MMS (Module Management System) is a tool that updates files by comparing the revision times of files you specify in a description file. If a "source" file (for example, an object module) is newer than its "target" (for example, an executable image), MMS updates the source by executing commands that you also supply in the description file. If some of the sources need updating, MMS updates them before building the target. If the target is newer than its sources, it is already up-to-date and MMS does not rebuild it.

PASCAL

The PASCAL language. PASCAL is a high-level structured programming language widely used in developing system and application software. VMS PASCAL meets both the ANSI and ISO PASCAL language standards.

PCA

The VMS Performance and Coverage Analyzer is a software development tool that helps you analyze the run-time behavior of application programs. The VMS Performance and Coverage Analyzer can pinpoint execution bottlenecks and other performance problems in user programs. Using this information, you can modify your programs to run faster. This tool also measures which parts of your program are or are not executed by a given set of test data so that you can devise tests that exercise all parts of your program.

The VMS Performance and Coverage Analyzer has two operational components: the Collector and the Analyzer. The Collector gathers performance or coverage data on a running user program and writes that data to a performance data file. Later, the Analyzer processes the collected data to produce performance or coverage histograms and tables.

PHIGS

PHIGS (Programmers Hierarchical Interactive Graphics System) is a sophisticated, 3-D graphics support system that controls the definition, modification, and display of heirarchical graphics data.

PHIGS is device independent. That is, the same program can generate graphical output on difference devices without modification to the source code.

PINE

Pine is a user-agent for reading, sending, and managing electronic messages. It was originally developed at the University of Washington with novice users in mind, but can be to accommodate the needs of more experienced users. The UNIX, DOS, and Windows versions are maintained by the Computing & Communications group at the University of Washington.

Pine has a full-screen interface which uses one-character mnemonic commands and control sequences for its command input. You do not have to hit the RETURN or ENTER key to finish a command. A command menu is always present at the bottom of the screen, and help is only one keystroke away.

RATS

RATS (Regression Analysis for Time Series) is a computer package for econometrics, forecasting, and statistical analysis. Its primary focus is upon time series data, but it may also be used for cross sectional and panel data sets.

RATS can be used for a variety of tasks, ranging from simple regressions, graphics and forecasting applications to very complex tasks.

RDB

RDB is a Relational database management system. It is part of the VMS Information Architecture and interfaces with Datatrieve and many VMS languages.

RDB is available on KANGA and TIGGER.

RTAPE

RTAPE is a program used to read foreign (not VMS format) magnetic tapes. It reads tapes which contain blocked, fixed length records, and tapes which contain unblocked, variable length records. It also translates the characters on the tape to the ASCII character set used by VMS. It is most useful for reading unlabeled IBM tapes.

RTAPE is available on KANGA and TIGGER.

Tapes must be mounted with the /FOREIGN qualifier.

To run RTAPE, enter the command

RUN LIB$TOOLS:RTAPE

RUNOFF

RUNOFF is a text-formatting facility. You enter RUNOFF commands and flags in a file along with the text you want to format. RUNOFF is then used to produce a formatted output file. RUNOFF can also produce indexes and tables of contents.

RUNOFF is available as part of all OpenVMS systems.

RUNOFF is invoked with the RUNOFF command.

SAS

The SAS System is a powerful software system for data analysis.

BASE SAS provides procedures for information storage and retrieval, data modification and programming, report writing, statistical analysis, and file handling.

SAS/ETS software contains procedures for econometric and time series applications.

SAS/GRAPH software is a device intelligent system for producing information and presentation graphics.

SAS version 8.12 is available on node KANGA.

SAS can be run interactively by entering

To process a file containing SAS programming statements enter:

SCA

The VMS Source Code Analyzer is an interactive, multilanguage, source code cross-reference and static analysis tool that is designed to aid developers in understanding the complexities of large-scale software systems.

SCRATCH

The SCRATCH program is used to set up the user's directory and logical names to use the scratch disk.

SPELL

SPELL is a proofreader which makes use of a dictionary maintained by the system, an optional a personal dictionary, and an optional `project' list of words whose spelling is unconventional.

SQL

SQL is an implementation of the Structured Query Language, an ANSI standard interface to relational database products. It is a database query utility used to define and access relational databases and to manipulate the data stored in these RDB databases. It offers an interactive data manipulation language (DML) utility, and data definition language (DDL) utility, preprocessors and dynamic SQL for COBOL, FORTRAN, and C.

TCOPY

TCOPY is a utility for copying or duplicating magnetic tapes. The copy tape may have a different density than the original tape. TCOPY may also be used to determine if two tapes are identical.

TCOPY is available on KANGA and TIGGER.

Tapes must be mounted with the /FOREIGN qualifier.

The general form of the TCOPY command is:

TCOPY/switches tape1:/switches tape2:/switches

TECO

TECO is a powerful text editor which deals with characters rather than lines or screens. TECO can be considered as a 'programmable editor', since commands may be combined into complex editing programs. This versatility makes TECO quite complex to learn. Users who wish to learn TECO should acquire a copy of DEC's TECO manual.

TELNET

TELNET uses the Internet-standard TELNET protocol to establish a virtual terminal connection to a remote host.

TELNET is available on KANGA, TIGGER, and RIGEL.

If the name of a remote host is specified on the DCL command line, TELNET immediately attempts to connect to the remote host. If no remote host is specified, TELNET prompts for commands.

Multinet Telnet is a product of Process Software


TeX

TeX (pronounced "tech") typesets a file of text. To be more specific, it processes an input file containing the text of a document with interspersed commands that describe how the text should be formatted. It produces high quality output and is especially useful for documents containing mathematical formula.

It produces a Device Independent (DVI) file that contains commands that can be translated into commands for a variety of output devices.

For a description of what goes on inside TeX, you should consult The TeXbook by Donald E. Knuth, ISBN 0-201-13448-9, published jointly by the American Mathematical Society and Addison-Wesley Publishing Company.

TPU

TPU (or Text Processing Utility) is a programmable text processing utility. It provides multiple editing interfaces to the user for different purposes. In addition to the EVE editor, TPU provides an EDT keypad emulator, and is the basis for the ACL editor.

TPU is available on all OpenVMS systems.

TPU requires a VT100, VT200, or compatible terminal.

The EDT keypad emulator may be invoked by entering the command SET KEYPAD EDT in TPU, or before entering TPU you may include the command SET KEYPAD EDT in your EVE$INIT.EVE file.


TSP

TSP is a general purpose computer language for econometric and statistical data processing and estimation. The program can be used for the following tasks:

UNZIP

UNZIP is the well known UNZIP program which unpacks ZIP files.

VILE

VILE is a VMS implementation of the UNIX VI editor. Features may vary between this implementation and other implementations of VI.

VTSET

A program for modifying many VT220 terminal settings.

Word Perfect

WordPerfect for VMS is a word processor. This software is functionaly compatible with WordPerfect 5.1 on the PC, and documents may be interchanged freely between the two. Documents may be imported from WordPerfect 5.0 or 4.2, or exported in WordPerfect 5.0 or 4.2 format.

WordPerfect is a product of Corel Corporation and distributed for VMS by by Spire Technologies, Inc.

WTAPE

WTAPE is a program used to write foreign (not VMS format) magnetic tapes. It writes tapes which contain blocked, fixed length records, and tapes which contain unblocked, variable length records. It also translates from the ASCII character set used by VMS to those used on the target system. It is most useful for writing unlabeled IBM tapes.

WTAPE is available on KANGA and TIGGER.

Tapes must be mounted with the /FOREIGN qualifier.

To run WTAPE, enter the command RUN LIB$TOOLS:WTAPE

XDVI

XDVI is a program which runs under the DECWindows system. It is used to preview DVI files, such as those produced by TeX and LaTeX.

XDVI has the capability of displaying the file reduced by various (integer) factors, and also has a "magnifying glass" which allows one to see a small part of the unshrunk image momentarily.

XDVI is available on TIGGER and KANGA.
